Olympic fever is slowly building here in British Columbia. It s a well-celebrated fact in this region that BC is hosting the Winter Olympics of 2010, and the one year count down has begun! Almost every time I turn the television on, I see one or the other of our athletes explaining how much they crave to win the gold for their country and how long and hard they ve been training to achieve that dream. They passionately believe they can do it! The image fades from the screen with the words, Do you believe?

It’s such a simple question – but so powerful in its essence. And it sums up how well we fight life’s battles, doesn t it? Do we believe that we are overcomers through the power of the blood and the word of our testimony? (Revelation 12:11)

These athletes overcome all odds to train for the earthly prize – one that’s coveted the world over, no doubt, but for a prize that has no eternal value. Yet even for this prize, they have to win the battle of the mind before they start the pursuit for the Olympic gold. They have to believe they can do it.

How many times are we bogged down by the enemy attack on an area he knows will cause fear, insecurity, unhappiness and ultimately failure – the mind? As we journey through the various seasons in our lives, we face different kinds of trials. But the connecting thread through all these battles is the same. The mind!

Every couple of weeks, my computer at work reminds me that it is updating itself to ensure that no virus is going to infiltrate the firewall that has been set up to protect it against attack. How well-guarded is my mind, though? Most battles in life are fought and won right there – in the mind! We have to realize that, if allowed, it has endless boundaries…!

Don’t let the enemy take the territory of your mind, beloved. Whatever the battle you’re fighting, stay strong. If you’re struggling with failure remember, “He’ll pick you up from the miry clay and set your feet upon solid rock.” (Psalm 40:2) If you’re tiring because of the length of the battle, the Lord’s Word for you today is, “You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you.” (2 Chronicles 20:17). If you’ve allowed the fear of defeat to paralyze your mind, the Lord says, Do not be afraid. Stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you, you need only to be still. (Exodus 14: 13)

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians: 3-5

Fight with the Word and press on for the goal regardless. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14)

Let me leave you with Jehoshaphat’s prayer in 2 Chronicles 20: 12b. “We have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you.” Keep your eyes fixed of the Lord, my friends, and use the weapons He has equipped us with – the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God and the prayer of the saints – our prayer. That s all we have and all we need. The battle belongs to the Lord!
